Mental Health Social Support Help those around you suffering mental illness in silence

Supporting those with Depression or Anxiety

This is a MHSS Specialty Course. To register to MHSS specialties you must first complete the core MHSS course - either online or via a 2-day workshop.

Are you now or have you ever been in a position where someone in your life - be it a friend, relative, child, primary partner or other - is "not themselves", and you wonder what to do about it?

This specialised topic of Mental Health Social Support, aims to equip the participant with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify and support people who are coping with depression and anxiety disorders. We assume that you have successfully completed the Mental Health Social Support course, and thus have learned the basic micro-skills of social supporting.

Aims of the Course

If you know someone suffering depression and/or anxiety, your role may be vital in helping the person to get better. You do that by first recognising their unwellness and helping them get treatment; then supporting them while they are recovering.

Thus, the aims of the course are to help you:

  1. Understand more about depression and anxiety disorders.
  2. Recognise the symptoms of depression and anxiety when you see them in someone.
  3. Find ways to broach the subject of illness with the person, and then help them initiate treatment.
  4. Continue supporting while the person is being treated and in recovery.
  5. Maintain a high standard of self-care while you extend support.

Prerequisite: MHSS Core Course
